Coating Application Temperature

FORTIS coatings have been designed so they may be used anywhere in Australia under most climatic conditions throughout the year.  However for best results, it is advised to follow the application guidelines.

The drying time of both epoxy and polyurethanes coatings can be influenced by:
  • ·      Temperature
  • ·      Humidity
  • ·      Airflow
  • ·      Film Thickness
  • ·      Whether 2 pack or single pack

For example, the recommended application window for single pack moisture curing polyurethane (FORTIS coat519) is approximately 12 – 35oC and 40 - 80% relative humidity, with an optimum temperature of 25oC and 60% relative humidity.  A significant drop of application temperature slows down the drying and curing process of the applied coating.  This occurs in winter where temperatures are below 12oC especially in the morning and late afternoon.  Also the temperature on the floor can be significantly lower than the surrounding air temperature and the temperature of the coating material stored in a van overnight can be extremely low.  As such the coating will perform differently.  It is best to work within the recommended application temperature.  If you need to apply under severe adverse conditions, specialist technical advice is recommended.

The FORTIS range of high end concrete and timber coatings meets these specifications and more.  The products include primers FORTIS PRIME520, PRIME820 and coatings FORTIS COAT519, COAT526 and COAT527.  Each has properties enabling high performance in many heavy use flooring applications.  These products, along with further information, are available at http://pykonline.com.au

High End Concrete and Timber Coatings

High End Concrete and Timber Coatings

There are many situations where a floor coating is required, ranging from protective to decorative reasons.  High end coatings are required to meet many specifications including ease of application, high adhesion, durability and be aesthetically pleasing in a wide range of circumstances.

Concrete and timber are often used as a flooring base for home, workplace or public areas.  On their own they provide reasonable aesthetic and durability properties.  However these can be improved dramatically by use of coatings.

Timber and concrete coatings can be available in gloss, satin & matt finishes, need to be non yellowing, be inert after application, be suitable for interior and exterior use, be extremely durable and resistant to a wide variety of insults.  These include foot traffic, machine traffic for example cars, trucks and forklifts, chemicals such as weak acid, oils, brake & radiator fluid, minor impact from tools and equipment, and be food grade rated.

Another area of major importance is the ease of application and recoating.  The coating needs to have very high adhesion to substrate primers and intercoats, be fast curing in a wide range of temperatures, have a comparatively low smell and provide a build level using 3 coats on a new surface and 1 to 2 coats when recoating.  A high end coating is also expected to adhere well to concrete coloring techniques for example colored acid stains.
